1) FRACTION STRIPS

7/8+3/4=1 5/8

To add or subtract fractions there must be a common denominator. If there are different denominators, multiply by the power of 1 to get a commmon denominator.

3) NUMBER LINE

4) CUISENAIRE RODS

7/8 + 3/4 =First find common deominator using power of one 3/4 x 2/2 = 6/8Then add fractions with common denominator7/8 + 6/8 = 13/8 or 1 5/8In order to add or subtract fractions you first must find the common denominator. In this example the common denominator is 8 so 3/4 was multiplied by 2/2 (this is the power of one) to get 6/8. After finding the common denominator of 8 the numerators can now be added (7 + 6) to equal 13. The answer is 13/8 or 1 5/8 which is bigger than 1.

2) RECTANGLE DIAGRAM

Fraction Strips - The fraction strip is used to find the answer & compare the fraction to one whole. First, we showed 1 whole unit. Then we showed 7/8th by showing 7 of the 1/8th pieces. Then we showed 3/4th by showing 3 of the 1/4 pieces which also equals 6/8 (3/4 x 2/2). Then we showed 7/8 + 6/8 which equals the answer of 1 5/8 which is bigger than 1.

We were assigned 7/8 + 3/4 = ?We will demonstrate how to find the answer and compare it to 1.

Number Line - The way you use the number line is: First you show the benchmark fractions on the number line of 0, 1/2, 1, 1 1/2, 2. Then you show 1/8, 2/8, 3/8, 4/8 (or 1/2)...up to 8/8 (or 1). Then 1 1/8, 1 2/8, up to 1 8/8 (or 2). Then circle 7/8 which is the starting point. Next you need to add 6/8 (3/4 x 2/2 = 6/8) to get your answer of 1 5/8.

7/8 + 3/4 =

3/4 x 2/2 (power of 1) = 6/8 so 7/8 + 6/8 =

7/8 + 6/8 = 13/8 or 1 5/8

7/8 + 3/4 =

3/4 x 2/2 (power of 1) = 6/8 so 7/8 + 6/8 =

7/8 + 6/8 = 13/8 or 1 5/8

Rectangle Diagram- 1) In the first rectangle, we showed 7 of the 8 rectangles shaded to show 7/8. Then we showed 3 of the 4 rectangles shaded in the next rectangle to show 3/4. 2) To add fractions we used the power of 1 to get the common denominator of 8 so we multiplied 3/4 x 2/2 to get 6/8 (so we shaded 6 out of 8).3) After finding the common denominator of 8, the numerators can now be added (7 + 6) to equal 13. The answer is 13/8 or 1 5/8 so we shaded 1 whole and 5 out of 8 rectangles in the next figure.

Cuisemaire Rods-First, 7/8 is shown with the black and brown rods and 3/4 is shown with green and purple rods.To add fractions we had to use the power of 1 to get the common denominator of 8 so we multiplied 3/4 x 2/2 to get 6/8. We showed that 6 is shown with a dark green rod which also equals two number 3 green rods. And 8 is shown with brown and is equal to two number 4 purple rods. After finding the common denominator of 8, the numerators can now be added (7 + 6) to equal 13. The answer is 13/8 or 1 5/8.

3/4 + 7/8 = 3/4 x 2/2 = 6/86/8 + 7/8 = 13/8 or 1 5/8

Use the power of one to find common denominators when adding or subtracting fractions.
